Politics: Diving in the Deep End

On March 25 James Cameron, writer and director of smash hits Titanic and Avatar, came up from a plunge to the deepest part of the sea via his one-man submarine. He had traveled below 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) taking 2 hours and 36 minutes to descend and only 70 minutes to ascend. The pressure of the water put Cameron in immediate danger of being crushed had anything gone wrong. Thankfully for him the pressure wasn’t enough for his 24 foot sub.

When I think about exploring the topic of politics I feel like I’m stepping into a submarine and heading into deep, dark and dangerous waters.  I imagine at any moment my computer might implode and crush me with criticism and pain.  Political discourse has been a major division for our society- for all societies. There are many “hot topics” and feelings of hate and anger are quite easily ignited when certain topics are discussed. But, here I am, diving in the deep end of the ocean praying the God would sustain me as I explore important topics.

There are a few reasons I’ve decided to step back into politics (articles and discussion only-no worries):

  1. I have a degree in political science. At one point I was quite interested in politics. I have always been interested in government and policy so it’s really a natural topic for me to step back into.

  2. I’m teaching a government Cooperative Learning Class at my church. I hope to send my students to this area of my site to add to the discussion or think through issues I bring up. They will also learn about various perspectives via interviews.

  3. I’d like to discuss Christianity and politics. My political ideology has evolved over the years. The change has been rooted in my Christian faith.  As I’ve grown to understand God’s Word I’ve questioned more of my political views. Though I do not believe that the Scriptures address many of the issues in the political arena today, I do believe that I must be guided by God’s Word and therefore that is where I begin when thinking through these topics.

The first article I have coming out on politics will not be on my site, rather it will appear on the Her.meneutics blog. Look here for more discussion, interviews, and features.

I’m strapping into my submarine and ready for take-off. The waters look murky and deep and dark but I’m jumping in. And we will dive in one, two, three, let’s go…
