Fostering a Relationship with the Lord

This morning I woke up and thought to myself, I want a relationship with Jesus. Here’s the good news, I have a relationship with Jesus. I am a Christian. But what I desire is to know him intimately, to pray, to read, to learn, and to love. I want to know my Savior and foster a relationship with him.  Often, not always, when I think of something or have a desire on my heart, the Lord provides the answer. Today, I woke up thinking about my relationship with Jesus and how much I love it and yet how much more I’d like to know him and then I stumbled upon the Desiring God website.

I’m not one for reinventing the wheel, so instead of writing a full post on relationship, I’ll point you to this post by Jon Bloom. Bloom points out six benefits to ordinary devotions. His main point is to encourage everyday, ordinary Bible reading without this need for a secret formula or magic pill. Reading and meeting with the Lord doesn’t need to be complicated and the daily exercise of this muscle will be of great benefit. One benefit I don’t remember reading from Bloom’s article is a deepened relationship with Jesus.

Listen, please please hear this. You can never earn your salvation. Please don’t let the fear of being legalistic keep you from knowing your Savior. I think of my husband and how I much I thought I knew him before we entered into marriage. I didn’t know him at all. I can say, after 10 years of talking, crying, confessing, screaming, arguing, asking questions, and wrestling with deep struggling, I know him. It is a good discipline to stoke the flame, press in, and ask tough questions with our Lord. I believe one way we do this is through Bible reading and prayer.

Begin today to foster your relationship with Jesus. I could give you a list of ideas (which I might soon) but for now, find a way to pray or read and enjoy knowing the Savior.
