Loving God and Others with Our Minds

We know how to act, and there are things we likely wouldn’t do just for fear of what others might think. But our minds are another story. No one sees what we’re thinking — at least, that’s the lie we tell ourselves. We can have vengeful, angry thoughts; we can lust; we can be anxious; we can judge others — all within the confines of our mind. We don’t have to say a word or make a move to sin.We know how to act, and there are things we likely wouldn’t do just for fear of what others might think. But our minds are another story. First Draft: A Blogging Series

Over the past few weeks, prolific blogger and author, Tim Challies, has posted a series of tweets and an article lamenting the changes he is seeing in the blogosphere. In short, writers are simply abandoning blogs, at least blogs that are personally owned. I believe he is right and as I’ve thought about it in regards to my own site, I know why I have not posted as frequently and it is simple, time…

Loving God and Others with Our Minds

We can find ourselves busy doing good things, many good and wonderful things, and before we know it we are flat on our faces exhausted. Maybe for you it’s serving in every ministry in your local church, bringing meals to every woman who gives birth, or picking up the phone instead of paying attention to that deadline. The Lord graciously used my Bible study with him to show me that I had my priorities mixed up and forgot to nurture my own love for Jesus. My Bible reading had become a task to do for others. But in doing that He also revealed my fear of what others would think if I simply said no. I saw how my over-commitment was affecting everything…

Is Diversity Important for the Church?

In the last 50 years, the term diversity has taken on many meanings. In the early 1960s, diversity most likely would have referred to the need for desegregation. By the ’70s and ’80s it would’ve been associated with affirmative action. Now diversity is often regarded as inclusivity in a myriad of ways…

12 Books For 2019

I interrupt your end of the year top 12 books lists to invite you to Come Read With Us! Maybe these will become your top 12 next year. I read quite a bit. Actually, I read more books a year than I ever share about, which is likely a shame given that I’m a writer (I ought to share more about what I’m reading!). That’s why I decided that next year would be different. I hope to read the following twelve books through 2019 and you are invited to Come Read With Us…

A Cherished Book, A Favorite Chapter

If someone had come up to me on the morning of my wedding day and asked me if I knew my husband-to-be well, I would have said yes without hesitation. Now, fifteen years later, I realize that while I did know him before I married him, I know so much more about him now. Our relationship has deepened, and my knowledge of him has exponentially increased since our wedding…

Lessons from a failed business and trying in the New Year

In 2007, I started an online fitness business. I produced a Christian CD for group fitness instructors and personal trainers to use with their clients. That venture was the start of my entrepreneurship—unless you count the time, at 12 years old, when I sold baked goods to my neighbors and surrounding businesses. I have always been a bit adventurous and seem to constantly have big ideas (still do!). In 2008, I managed the group fitness instructors and program for a local fitness chain. I did the basic work of a manager but saw more potential and began to implement programs, fundraisers, and marketing strategies. A few years passed and I realized that I had been putting a lot of time and energy into another company and it dawned on me, I can do this on my own… So I did…

#Blessed

Last week I shared on my various social media sites, a brief takeaway from a conversation I had with my mother. This takeaway has struck a nerve, understandably so. In our social media world, the use of the term “blessed” has been turned into a proclamation of all the good things that we have from vacations to cars to a new home…

Pictures of Hope and Reconciliation: A Giveaway!

The world is broken… Because of Genesis 3, we aren’t surprised by the brokenness, depravity, pain, and sorrow around us. Even creation is groaning, awaiting the day when it will be freed and all things will be made new. And perhaps one of the greatest effects of the fall is the hostility present in so many of our relationships and institutions. We need not look much further than our social media feeds to see this divide. And it could be easy to say it’s out there and not in here—in the church. Our division is pervasive. But Genesis 3 didn’t have the last word; Jesus defeated sin and death through the cross and resurrection. And although we wait for his return in a world filled with hate and despair, there are many glimpses of beauty, joy, reconciliation, and love all around…

Never “Arrive”

As I’ve highlighted on the blog, I’m currently teaching a Bible study on Ephesians at my local church. It has been such a joy but last week might have been one of the sweetest. Instead of doing a devotional, I wanted to share with you one thing one woman shared with all of us during that time…

Getting Real in Your Relationships

oday I get to share with you the foreword I wrote for my friend’s excellent book Real: The Surprising Secret to Deeper Friendships. Make sure to check out the trailer and links to learn more about Catherine Parks and her new book. I’ve always had a sensitive conscience: even before I became a Christian, I would confess wrongdoing to my parents. Vulnerability was never difficult for me when I was younger. Oddly, once I became a Christian, I started to become more aware of how I would be viewed by others, and that vulnerability all of a sudden felt much more risky…

All His Doing

My husband and I had two broken engagements before we were married. Yes, two. I was young and immature. I thought I needed to live it up a bit longer when really what I needed was Jesus. I wasn’t a Christian and neither was he. But my Thern continually pursued me. He never held my sin against me. He lavished care and sometimes, even gifts on me. But it wouldn’t be until the Lord sought me and saved me before I would marry this man I have loved now for over 15 years…

Week 2, 40-Day Challenge Giveaway: Books, Books, and more Books!

When I first thought of the 40-Day (Birthday) Challenge, I was concerned that it might be silly or not serious enough given that I write often about serious matters. I quickly remembered an old post I wrote on being a serious Christian and wondered if that ugly sin of the fear of man was motivating my questioning. As I’ve participated and read comments and interactions from the men and women participating through the Facebook group, I’ve realized how the Lord is already using this challenge to restore joy, enable “self-forgetfulness” and thus a focus on others, and build habits of spiritual disciplines. That was my prayer before it launched and I believe the Lord is already answering it!

40-Day (Birthday) Challenge

In a little over a month, I’ll be turning the big 4-0. I do not dread the years to come. I absolutely feel older—both in body and mind. My body feels aches like never before while my mind seems to be sharper. Most importantly, I sense in unique ways the nearness of God. I imagine, as there have been every decade, that I will experience both joys and deep sorrows. God has been faithful—it is my song. I trust He will be faithful over these next years, too. I’m excited and grateful…
