WELCOME TO THE BLOG

Jesus Loves Me…’Cause the Bible Tells Me So
“Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.” Do you remember singing this as a young child? I do. I didn’t understand a single word of it at the time, except that someone named Jesus must love a lot of people. It wouldn’t be until the age of 22 that I understood that this love meant death, his death. And that part of receiving and understanding fully his love meant my death and new life. It is a rich truth but what I missed then I know now: Jesus loves me this I know because the Bible tells me so.

Introducing Tri for Others
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

Why the Crickets
Cricket. Cricket. That’s the sound of a blog that is empty of content.
That’s been the sound here!
But for good reason…

Guess Who’s Invited to Dinner?
In the 1967 movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Joanna “Joey” Drayton, a young white woman played by Katharine Houghton, brings her black boy friend, Dr. John Prentice, played by Sidney Poitier, home to meet her family. Though the parents raised Joanna to be “liberal” and “accepting” they do not approve of her desire to marry Dr. Prentice. The movie was radical for that day—so I’d think. But not so fast. Today we continue to grapple with the same questions and issues.

Condemnation and Abortion
This was on my heart last night for those who will be in church today who have had abortions, who have asked forgiveness and continue to struggle.

Lessons from a Conference: God’s Grace in Transparency
Yesterday my family packed up and drove to Atlanta so I could speak at the Impact Movement Conference. I was tasked with sharing with the women about sexual temptation, impurity, lust and how to fight it all to the glory of God. The conference coordinator named my talk “Moral Fitness” which was fitting as I was going to be addressing how we exercise self-control over our minds and bodies. As these things typically go, I am now leaving more aware of God’s grace and power than when I arrived…

Top Posts and Other New Things of 2013
It’s always fun to receive an unexpected gift. This Christmas a dear friend made me a homemade necklace. Along with the necklace was a card in which she wrote, “I made this necklace for you, Trill. It’s a symbol of new life and new starts in a new place…We love you and miss you all!!!” Her note, besides bringing me much joy, sums up 2013 for me; new life and new starts in almost every area of my life, including writing…

Thankfulness After Thanksgiving
For one month out of the year most Americans are contemplating all that is good every single day. You see it most vividly via social media as people post what they are most thankful for each day. It is November, the month of Thanksgiving. But what happens in December or even further down the road when the month of remembering to be thankful is but a distant memory. God’s word doesn’t designate a month for thanksgiving, but a lifetime…

During the Holidays, My Hope Comes from the Lord
It was a typical night in my home when I got the dreaded call. The kids were running around after a warm summer’s day. I was curled up on the couch chatting with my husband. All seemed to be well with the world and then the phone rang. My oldest sister was intensive care and it wasn’t looking good. By midnight she was gone. It’s one of those surreal moments in life that you wish you could forget but you know you never will. In a few days, I will gather with my remaining fun-loving sisters and mom to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will laugh a lot, you can’t get us in a room together without hearing laughter, and I imagine we will think and speak about our sister. There is no doubt that we will also mourn that she is not with us this year…

Enjoy Those Babies
I would never describe myself as a mommy blogger. I love them though. I love that they are writing about the wonders and trials of motherhood. Though I’m not a mommy blogger I do have a desire for moms, like me, to enjoy these years. They are hard. I cry at times wondering how I will make it through a day. But when my soul calms and I get a glimpse of those little eyes looking back at me, I get it. I stop and I know that God is pleased with me. God isn’t pleased with me because I’m a perfect mom–I’m not–He is pleased with me because of His son. Perhaps you thought I’d say that I look at my kids eyes and I know they are pleased. I’m not living for them. I’m living for my Savior and knowing that He is pleased is all I need to know as I seek to raise my kids…

When You Feel Like a Failure as a Parent
I finished reading Pastor John Piper’s most recent post on raising children, looked at my husband and cried out, “We are failing.” He looked at meand said, “We are learning.” Yes. That is right. We are learning.
Pastor John urges parents to require that their children obey. After my episode, I wondered if there were other parents who felt the same way as I did at that moment: deflated, incapable, and self-sufficient. There isn’t anything I’d like better than to know that I trained my children well. But I can’t do it on my own. I can’t muster up the energy. I can’t read enough books. Oh, I can try. I can try in my own strength. I can try in my own wisdom. I can read every parenting book on the market. I can do all of those things, but it is only God who will enable me to be faithful in my calling to train my children…

Fostering a Relationship with the Lord
This morning I woke up and thought to myself, I want a relationship with Jesus. Here’s the good news, I have a relationship with Jesus. I am a Christian. But what I desire is to know him intimately, to pray, to read, to learn, and to love. I want to know my Savior and foster a relationship with him. Often, not always, when I think of something or have a desire on my heart, the Lord provides the answer. Today, I woke up thinking about my relationship with Jesus and how much I love it and yet how much more I’d like to know him and then I stumbled upon the Desiring God website…

New Role at The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission
Yesterday it was announced that I am joining Dr. Russell Moore’s team as the consultant for women’s initiatives for the ERLC. I am honored to be among five newly announced staff members, you can read more about that here. Dr. Moore addresses serious, delicate, and often complicated issues and topics affecting today’s society, church, and government with great thoughtfulness and grace. I have the utmost respect for him…

Why Should We Value Human Relationships?
What does it mean to bear the image of God? That is a question that I continually explore and one that I had the opportunity to address in August at The Gospel Projectblog.
Here is the introduction:
As God’s image bearers we are all equal. We are equal in dignity and worth. We are created equally in His image. We are also fallen equally (Romans 3:23). Genesis 1:26 explains that God created man in His image. Of all of God’s creation, we are the only ones created in His very image, we have dominion over the rest (Genesis 1:28). It is a profound mystery (God is spirit so we do not bear His physical image, John 4:24) and yet a great privilege. Understanding our equality as image bearers changes everything we think about as it relates to our human relationships.

United Has a Cover and Other Updates
Earlier this year I shared the news that I would be writing a book about friendship, diversity, and the church. The book is called United: Captured by God’s Vision for Diversityand I am now in the final stages of the editorial process. To be honest, I’m not sure that editorial process is the proper terminology. One thing I have learned quickly is that writing a book isn’t just about writing! Here’s what I do know, it’s finished!..

DRAFTED: Chris Norman’s story
Life is but a breath. The older I get the clearer this truth appears to ring true. Everything seems to be speeding up. Years are getting shorter. The time I thought I had in my younger days—days I wished away—are now here and I sense them passing away quickly.
Chris Norman, an All-American football player and standout Michigan State University Linebacker, caught this vision early. Knowing that he only has a short time on earth, he decided to give up what many would think of as a dream NFL career for theological training and pastoral ministry. He heard the cries of family and friends as he made his decision, “You’re wasting what God has given you,” but was lead by this louder voice in his head: “But the one thing that I have to do is follow Christ because at the end of the day that’s the opinion I care about the most.”
Watch his story about how the Lord led him to make the tough decision to turn down a promising career in the NFL for ministry and how the book Don’t Waste Your Life was a pivotal tool in that decision.

A Week of Prayerfully Considered Articles
I’ve quipped once before that it would be much easier if I chose to write about tulips, and not the Reformed kind! I often write about topics and subjects that I have been praying through. This week was, for me, a perfect storm of deeply personal articles. I had been drafting one particular article for over two months. That is how long, at times, it takes for me to prayerfully consider what goes from heart, to head, to computer, to published…

Reflections from My Time in “The Third Most Miserable City in America”
The town is Rockford, Illinois and Bob Bixby, pastor of Morning Star Church located in the heart of the city, introduced it to me as “the third most miserable city in America.” This weekend I had the honor to speak with women from the Chicagoland area and beyond at The Grace and Truth Conference in the reportedly depressed town. The pastors and their wives were gracious and hospitable. I had been praying that the Lord would bless this weekend, and as He always does, His grace and kindness far surpassed what I could have imagined…

A New Role at CBMW
Over the past few months I have been working behind the scenes with Owen Strachan, Brandon Smith and Courtney Reissig to develop a new Women’s Channel for the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. I’m excited to be the lead Editor of the Channel with Courtney as the assistant Editor. Courtney has been a joy and blessing to get to work with already and we haven’t even launched! We are having a blast working together!

A New and Better Feast
Relevance: The quality of being directly connected with and important to something else
I’ve been doing a little wrestling match with the word relevance today. As a freelance journalist I’m generally on the lookout for what is relevant for today’s reader. What is the latest trend, news story, and what has gone viral. These are questions that are valid and important for readership.
I’ve noticed that much is the same for blogging. We are searching out what is the hot topic for the week and what might be useful to address. What are people “liking” and reposting, etc. It’s good to be aware of what others find interesting or powerful so that we might encourage or challenge one another (when done graciously, of course)…
